In August of last year we lost the legendary VP of Communications for Churchill Downs John Asher to a sudden heart attack. When I think of Kentucky Derby, I will always think of John. His incredible memory, unique voice, passion for horse racing, and ability to tell a story about each Derby race were most remarkable. Kentucky Derby weekends will never be the same without John to put it all in perspective. 

As soon as each Kentucky Derby Race ended, John would tell us exactly how many days were left until the next Derby. Like a child counting down toward Christmas, Asher would make it a point during public appearances to mention the exact number of days until the next Derby. And you couldn’t stump him on that number if you stopped him on the street. 

In my small tribute to John Asher, this Spring in our monthly newsletters we will be counting down the days until Kentucky Derby 145 on Saturday May 4th.
